Security Awareness and Education
Are we providing information about computer security to our
staff?
The primary goal of the security awareness program is to
reduce security vulnerabilities through education and promotion
of good security practices. Given the rapid changes in computing
technology, security awareness must be an ongoing activity.
These questions highlight some of the major actions that
improve security awareness:
- Do faculty and staff fully understand their responsibility
for computer security?
- Have all copies of department software been properly licensed
and registered?
- Has the University's copyright policy been distributed
and discussed within the department?
- Have School and department-specific security policies
and procedures been documented and shared with all faculty
and staff?
- Are faculty and staff keeping current on University security
issues and alerts?
An answer of "no" to any of the above questions
indicates a risk for which remedial steps should be considered.
